Oh damn that would be mean in a game. Imagine something like Pathfinder where if an attack missed because of your dodge bonus, as opposed to your armor bonus, it could hit collateral targets. I could definitely see some mean DMs doing that.
Also how old is Don and the other PCs? I assume they're not in a high school, but Don is quite new so is he a teenager, or perhaps first year college student, or something else? I was just curious how they know each other outside the game.
I think the players we've seen are young adults, early to mid 20s. I don't have any real evidence for this, that's just what their level of maturity and style of speech makes me think.
I can confirm none of the current cast are teenagers. In fact, Rob's the youngest of the players in the "Iron Man" campaign, and he's 23 as of Iron Man 2.
Unfortunately, how EVERYONE knows each other isn't something I can fully answer just yet, partly because some connections are meant to be surprises for later, and partly because in the interest of total honesty? I don't have everyone's personal details fully fleshed out yet.
A big factor in this is that I'm writing this with the (extremely presumptuous and probably overly optimistic) expectation that the comic will EVENTUALLY go all the way through Phase 3 and into Phase 4 and beyond, and that means certain characters' stories are going to be ongoing beyond what I currently have planned or are even able to plan for, so I'm really hesitant to lock myself into something before it's necessary for the story.
That being said, I DO have some connections planned that I can talk about freely, which are:
* Kevin and Sarah have known each other most of their lives, and are basically family.
* Sarah and Gwyneth are high school friends, and Sarah's the one who introduced Gwyneth to the game.
* Kevin, Clark, and Scarlett are all former coworkers.
* Kevin met Rob through them both hanging around the same game store, and after hearing about enough of Rob's nightmare character builds they eventually started playing together.
You'd think all this stuff would make it past the playtesters...
...or not, since everybody loves being an overpowered mecha avatar of god
ETT 14) Kevin, Clark, and Scarlett all worked at the same quality control office, where Kevin was quite good at finding broken products, Clark couldn't recognize a broken product if he tried, and Scarlett accidentally broke everything she touched.
