Suitably paranoid players will find the slightest thing to be paranoid over. At one point my friends and I started running with the assumption that any character with a hat was someone else in disguise.

Is it really paranoid if it's justified? Lesson for Kevin: next time either name all NPCs, or name non of them.

Story time about nominal importance.

I was GMing a game in a Japanese fantasy setting. To save myself time, I took the monsters and NPCs from Touhou Project universe. As a result, borrowed NPC had names. obviously. Then I caught myself that I was giving the party not only their names, but surnames as well. And then it struck me, that by giving their surnames I disclose that I didn't made those characters myself, because I would not make surnames for my characters. So I stopped.

Don't underestimate players: mine quite capable to google names and find a source from which I take inspiration for my campaigns. They did it before.

Yeah, the few times I've ever had to name anything other than my own PC's they've either been really simple to the point where there's no real inspiration (Jeremy the Bloodmage), or it's such an obvious send-up that I sacrificed any semblance of originality.

Once upon a time I was trying to come up with a sort of Legion of Doom of villainous NPC's, with the gimmick that they were all going to take archetypes of the Vigilante class. I think only one ever got to the naming stage, a Gunmaster named Hank Fortress. No prizes for guessing who he was a send-up of. Maybe a No Prize though. XD
