And on the flipside of "skills that you prefer to fall back on even when they might not apply", we have its diametrically-opposed cousin. Skills that keep coming up more often than you'd expect. Even if the skill is "speaking German in a WWII campaign".

I wonder how this feels to players who only started gaming after internet groups for RPGs (playing or discussing) became so common. For someone like me, who started playing back in the mid-90s*, even to this day I'll be like "What? Really?" as I find out how normal or abnormal my experience with these games has been. Just recently, unarmed combat Skills (in GURPS) came up. Some were like "Unarmed combat Skills just aren't worth it unless they're you're focus." while others of us are like "At least put a Character Point into Brawling, so you can throw a half-decent punch with some hope of actually connecting."

Now, adding even more relevance to the above is... I think we (the people in my old, high school gaming group) had a bad habit of forgetting the Driving Skill in our GURPS games. Granted, operating a car by default isn't too bad, but driving under stereotypical adventuring conditions (see above comic), you really want it. XD
